T-1 4-4-4-4 PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD

The classic T-1 - One of the Pennsylvania Railroad's grandest and most successful attempts to stave off the diesel's onslaught. First introduced in 1942, during World War II, fifty-two were constructed by 1946. Raymond Loewy was engaged to apply his industrial design magic, to transform a technical feat into a aesthetic one. The unique 4-4-4-4 wheel arrangement afforded numerous engineering advantages over conventional designs -at a price: complication. Pulling numerous prestigious PRR name trains west of Harrisburg, the T-1 earned a reputation of a true thoroughbred - enormously strong, but, temperamental. But no one can deny the grace and stunning beauty of Loewy's classic design. This T-1 illustrates how the T-1 looked late in its career.
