Pennsylvania Railroad SD-45
Electro-Motive Div., General Motors 1965

EMD built the ultimate in what is now called the "dash one" series. That was the brutish SD-45. With its 20 cylinders and 3,600 horsepower it would hold the power crown for years. It is easily identified by its bulging rear radiators and its sheer size. In all, about 1,260 units were built making the SD-45 the most popular of the big "dash one" locomotives.

Our Model

Our SD-45 was made by Samhongsa for Eastern Railways. It has the usual brass construction, is reasonably well detailed with cab interior, operating doors, lights, etc. Two Canon motors power the loco and it has 30 ball bearings in the drive system. It is displayed in the very dark "Brunswick green" colors of the PRR. This is the type of model that a newcomer to Gauge 1 should consider as his first model. It is reasonably priced, yet, its level of detail will never make it obsolete. 90 models were made in total with 15 painted for the PRR.
