Be 4/6 1-B-B-1
Swiss Federal Railways

The Gotthard line - The mention of these words congers images of steep grades, the long tunnel, and the snow covered Alps. The SBB specifications called for an electric locomotive that could haul a 300t train up a 2.6% grade at a minimum speed of 31 mph. This articulated design was well suited for the sharp curves of the line, while dynamic braking helped with holding the train back when coming downhill. On the longest and heaviest trains, double-heading was used. These locos were used in both passenger and fast freight operations. First introduced in 1919, the Be 4/6 served many years, only recently being retired.

OUR MODEL

It was made in Korea for the Basil model train shop called Ameba-Schirmer. The detail is barely adequate and is nowhere near the Bockholt version which costs many times more. Sheet photoetched brass is the main construction material.
