Ae 3/6 II, Swiss Federal Railway, 1924

The Ae 3/6 II electric locomotives were built for high speed passenger service on the Gotthard Line. This meant that the locos had to produce enough power to scale the Alps while still providing fast service to the riders. The Ae 3/6 II had 2,000 hp and could travel at speeds up to 100 kph. This is really moving in the Alps! All 60 Ae 3/6 II locos were retired by 1977 giving five decades of service.
